At high resolutions, distant objects and grass/trees actually looks quite good like this but the dithering seems to mess up particle effects and close textures. It works by providing a dithering pattern to the edges of all the textures. Side note - Fallout New Vegas (and FO3 before it) have an in-game settings for transparency MSAA which differs from the drivers. No transparency MS needed, although I guess since it's applied per texture it could potentially make things even better at the cost of performance So if you only run 4xMS+transparency AA try giving 2xSS a go. If you use nvidia inspector to force an alternate AA method (assuming it's compatible with your card) you can force like 2xSS which looks better than 4xMS. If you have 8x SSTAA on, basically the card will render an alpha texture 8x it's size and then downsample it to the size being displayed to reduce jaggies. There doesn't seem to be a performance hit either way but there is using any of the SS methods depending on your hardware. Depending on the application, MSAA transparency versus off might not be different at all or the effect is subtle. But MSAA only smooths the edges of polygons, not the edges of transparent alpha textures. Us gamers use anti-aliasing in on our graphics card to reduce jaggies and MSAA is the most popular method.
